There are a few different shot types in basketball, with mechanics and technique being an essential part of all of them. The jump shot is a very common shot in basketball, and it consists of numerous steps.

It starts with looking at where you want to shoot and ensuring that your body is square with the target. The feet should roughly shoulder-width apart, and the knees should be slightly bent. The feet should point in the general area of the basket, and the stance should be comfortable and easy to repeat.

The ball must start in what is called the pocket. This is the area on the dominant side of the shooter around the start of the ribs. The dominant hand should be on the back of the ball, with the other hand acting as a guide.

Start by bending the knees, and at the same time, the arms should be going through the motion of bringing the ball up to the ready. This spot will differ for each shooter, by the elbow on the dominant hand should be bent around 90 degrees, and the ball will be around the shooter’s head.

The shooter then jumps up with their bent legs and simultaneously releases the ball towards the net with the wrist flicking and the dominant hand pointing at the basket. The goal is to release the ball at the arc of the jump.
