Broadstep Behavioral Health acquires Coastal Southeastern United Care
RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA – Broadstep Behavioral Health, serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and severe persistent mental illness, has acquired Coastal Southeastern United Care. Coastal (CSEUC) is a behavioral health and substance abuse agency providing a wide range of diagnostic and treatment programs in North and South Carolina. Broadstep, a portfolio company of Bain Capital’s Double Impact fund, operates in seven states and is headquartered in Raleigh.

“We are pleased to welcome Coastal team members and the individuals they serve into the Broadstep family,” said Lynn Mason, Broadstep’s President and CEO. “Together, we look forward to addressing the many challenges facing behavioral healthcare and continuing to improve the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.”

Established in 2010 and based in Brunswick County, North Carolina, CSEUC is a Critical Access Behavioral Health Agency providing a continuum of community-based behavioral health and substance abuse services for adults, adolescents, and children. Nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitative Healthcare, CSEUC currently serves ten North Carolina counties (Bladen, Brunswick, Cleveland, Columbus, Gaston, Lincoln, New Hanover, Pender, Robeson, and Scotland), and Dillon County in South Carolina.

“The core values of the Coastal Southeastern United Care team include accountability, integrity, innovation, and commitment to the communities we serve,” said Stacy Williamson, CEO and former co-owner of CSEUC. “Our employees derive their commitment and dedication from years of providing excellent service. We have witnessed clinical outcomes of our services and have seen how they positively impact people’s lives and our communities.”

“Coastal has worked diligently in our communities and within our walls to change perceptions of mental health and to promote understanding and compassion for the individuals we serve,” said Kelly Williamson, former co-owner. “We meet the individuals where they are, assist them to live as independently as possible, reunify with their families, and serve as a resource to fill in the gaps. It’s education. It’s working together.”

The need for increased mental health and substance abuse services is compelling. The latest data from the National Alliance on Mental Illness reports that only half (50.6%) of US youth ages 6-17 with mental health disorders received treatment. The numbers were more discouraging for US adults, with just 44.8% receiving treatment. Furthermore, nearly one in five adults in the US with mental illness experienced co-occurring disorders with substance abuse (9.5 million individuals).

Broadstep acquires Bethesda residential and support programs in Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin
RALEIGH, NC – Broadstep Behavioral Health, serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and severe persistent mental illness (SPMI), acquired Bethesda Lutheran Communities’ residential and support programs in Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin. Broadstep is a portfolio company of Bain Capital’s Double Impact fund.

“We are pleased to welcome Bethesda team members and the individuals they serve into the Broadstep family,” said Lynn Mason, Broadstep’s President and CEO. “Together, we look forward to addressing the many challenges facing behavioral healthcare and continuing to improve the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities – a mission established by Bethesda almost 120-years ago.”

Bethesda Lutheran Communities (BLC) provides services and support for those diagnosed with I/DD through community-based homes, day programs, at-home life-skills development, job placement, and behavioral support. By acquiring BLC homes in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin, Broadstep continues its expansion of residential services in the Midwest, following on the heels of the acquisition of Good Hope Manor in Wisconsin in December.

The Case for Inclusion, released annually by the Ancor Foundation and United Cerebral Palsy, reveals a waiting list for housing and services of more than 26,000 people in Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin – and more than 470,000 people nationwide. Rising costs, low medical reimbursements, reduced revenue from other sources, and the COVID-19 pandemic have adversely impacted programs for individuals with I/DD.

According to a report by the KUNI Foundation published by Spectrum Life Magazine, “People with intellectual and developmental disabilities face a housing crisis.” Supply is not meeting demand in the United States.

“There are so many individuals that need help,” said Mason, named President and CEO of Broadstep in 2019. “Behavioral health is still a segment of the population that is largely forgotten. That’s not where they should be. Individuals with low IQs are not only challenged with their learning disability, many also struggle with behavioral health disorders that have never been addressed. At Broadstep, I believe we can build the right continuum of care and align with great community partners, health systems, and payers to help address these needs.”

According to Dr. Scott Huntington, Ph.D., Broadstep’s Chief Clinical Officer and former corrections system psychologist, undiagnosed and untreated behavioral health disabilities weigh heavily on the judicial system, with many individuals in prison. “Putting their quality of life in jail aside for a moment, the cost to keep and treat individuals in prison is three times the amount of those not incarcerated. This person, this child, this adult, is struggling, and we believe we have the opportunity within this healthcare system and with our partners to tackle these challenges. We want to make sure they can live a good quality, productive life and be an additive back to their communities.”

When access to care is provided to this population, the positive impact is undeniable. According to a recent study by the American Journal on Public Health, Americans living with disabilities with no home support system receive less preventive care, have a higher incidence of chronic conditions, and visit the hospital and emergency department more often — leading to much higher health care spending than for the average adult.

NC’s Broadstep Behavioral Health acquires SC’s Pinelands Group Homes

RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA – North Carolina-based Broadstep Behavioral Health, a Bain Capital Double Impact company, has acquired Pinelands Group Homes, located in South Carolina. This purchase follows Broadstep’s acquisition in January of Excalibur Youth Services, also headquartered in the Palmetto State.

Founded in 1972, Broadstep is a leading national provider serving children, adults, and families with a range of services that support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), mental illness, and co-occurring disorders. With twin missions to expand expert care and quality services to families in need, the Pinelands acquisition is joining more than ninety existing Broadstep locations in Illinois, New Jersey, Nebraska, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Wisconsin.

The Case for Inclusion, released annually by the Ancor Foundation and UCP, reveals a waiting list for home and community-based services exceeding 470,000 people in the United States – including over 10,400 in South Carolina. Service capacity in South Carolina would need to double to meet current demand in the state, according to the 2020 report. The Case for Inclusion is one of the nation’s leading sources of data assessment of services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

“We are committed to Pinelands and the people of South Carolina,” said Lynn Mason, President and CEO of Broadstep. “There are many individuals that need our help and a continuum of care. Just over a year ago, we had a few locations in South Carolina serving the needs of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. By the end of this year, Broadstep will be across the state.”

Founded in 1996, Pinelands has four facilities in the Summerville area offering holistic and individualized programs for children and adolescents with significant impairment in behavioral, emotional, familial and/or social functioning. Pinelands provides its communities a myriad of intermediate to long-term group care and intensive services designed to help improve behaviors, develop new coping skills, and facilitate future growth and independence. These services range from social, physical, and emotional care services to life skill development programs through educational, vocational, and career preparation services.

“I’ve had the privilege of working with the exceptional team at Pinelands for the last 20-years,” said John Short, Southeast Regional Vice President of Broadstep. “It is now a great honor to have Pinelands as part of the Broadstep family and will help us expand and diversify our services in South Carolina.”

“We’re so happy to welcome Pinelands into the Broadstep community,” said Mason. “Pinelands has a unique approach to how they care for their youth. I've been there on a number of occasions and watched, in particular, how their programs work with their teenage girls – I'm so impressed. I want the rest of us to learn from how they are operating and how they're changing lives in South Carolina. The teammates are great. They work really hard, they've been there for a long time, and we hope they feel just as loved by Broadstep as they feel about Pinelands.”

NC-based behavioral healthcare company acquires operations in SC

RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA – North Carolina-based Broadstep Behavioral Health, Inc., part of the Bain Capital Double Impact Fund portfolio, announced today its acquisition of South Carolina-based provider, Excalibur Youth Services LLC.

Relocating its headquarters from Wisconsin to North Carolina in 2020, Broadstep is a leading national provider of residential and community-based services to individuals with intellectual, developmental, and behavioral health conditions, including autism, mental illness, and I/DD (intellectual and developmental disabilities).

During its 49-year history, Broadstep has grown to over 90 facilities serving more than 1,300 individuals in Wisconsin, Illinois, South Carolina, New Jersey, and Nebraska. On December 31, 2020, Broadstep announced further expansion in Wisconsin through the acquisition of Good Hope Manor, an assisted living provider serving mentally ill individuals with chronic and often debilitating medical conditions.

Excalibur, initially founded in 1989 as Avalonia Group Homes Inc., provides residential treatment services to I/DD and severely mentally ill populations throughout SC and a growing presence in NC. Since its inception, company leadership has been provided by the Short family, founded by Dr. MJ Short, and subsequently passed to his sons, Marvin J. Short and John M. Short. The founding family created and maintains an environment of people-centered care, firmly focused on self-reliance and strengthening families through specialized programs, strong operational processes, and a relentless adherence to the highest quality care.

Excalibur currently operates six treatment facilities in SC, including three group homes, two PRTFs, and one Intensive Services Facility. The company also serves individuals in NC through its Level III group home for males located in Hendersonville. John Short will remain with Broadstep, leading operations, growth, and expansion across the southeast as Regional Vice President.

Broadstep’s President and CEO, Lynn Mason, states, “The addition of Excalibur to the Broadstep family expands our geographic reach and service capabilities within South Carolina. Together, our companies’ homes and services are centered in three of South Carolina’s most populous MSAs, representing nearly 25% of the state’s population and growing.”

According to the Ancor Foundation’s 2019 report, “The Case for Inclusion,” SC’s Home and Community-Based Services waiting list was 11,275 and growing, meaning service capacity would need to expand 110% in the state to match those levels of demand. The latest market profiles published by OPEN Minds reveals the southeastern region of the US has seen a particular rise in the need for programs and services for those challenged with behavioral health issues and/or developmental disabilities. Increasing capacity to meet this demand is essential to both organizations. As noted by John Short, “Excalibur can help meet this growing need more efficiently and effectively with Broadstep.”

The combined company also expands Broadstep’s reach into NC and emphasizes Broadstep’s commitment to extending services throughout its current national regions, including the southeast. Ms. Mason further shares, “The combination of our two companies offers individuals and agencies the ability to work with one provider to service the broader needs along the continuum of care. Excalibur and John Short bring a unique set of expertise that complement our current offerings, specifically in the areas of High Management Group Homes and intensive care services focused on male youths. Together with our expertise in I/DD and Severe Persistent Mental Illness, our newly combined companies will be equipped to offer a broader set of services to individuals within South Carolina and North Carolina.”
