RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA – Broadstep Behavioral Health, serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and severe persistent mental illness, has acquired Coastal Southeastern United Care. Coastal (CSEUC) is a behavioral health and substance abuse agency providing a wide range of diagnostic and treatment programs in North and South Carolina. Broadstep, a portfolio company of Bain Capital’s Double Impact fund, operates in seven states and is headquartered in Raleigh.

Established in 2010 and based in Brunswick County, North Carolina, CSEUC is a Critical Access Behavioral Health Agency providing a continuum of community-based behavioral health and substance abuse services for adults, adolescents, and children. Nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitative Healthcare, CSEUC currently serves ten North Carolina counties (Bladen, Brunswick, Cleveland, Columbus, Gaston, Lincoln, New Hanover, Pender, Robeson, and Scotland), and Dillon County in South Carolina.

The need for increased mental health and substance abuse services is compelling. The latest data from the National Alliance on Mental Illness reports that only half (50.6%) of US youth ages 6-17 with mental health disorders received treatment. The numbers were more discouraging for US adults, with just 44.8% receiving treatment. Furthermore, nearly one in five adults in the US with mental illness experienced co-occurring disorders with substance abuse (9.5 million individuals).

Bethesda Lutheran Communities (BLC) provides services and support for those diagnosed with I/DD through community-based homes, day programs, at-home life-skills development, job placement, and behavioral support. By acquiring BLC homes in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin, Broadstep continues its expansion of residential services in the Midwest, following on the heels of the acquisition of Good Hope Manor in Wisconsin in December.

The Case for Inclusion, released annually by the Ancor Foundation and United Cerebral Palsy, reveals a waiting list for housing and services of more than 26,000 people in Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin ­– and more than 470,000 people nationwide. Rising costs, low medical reimbursements, reduced revenue from other sources, and the COVID-19 pandemic have adversely impacted programs for individuals with I/DD.

According to a report by the KUNI Foundation published by Spectrum Life Magazine, “People with intellectual and developmental disabilities face a housing crisis.” Supply is not meeting demand in the United States.

“There are so many individuals that need help,” said Mason, named President and CEO of Broadstep in 2019. “Behavioral health is still a segment of the population that is largely forgotten. That’s not where they should be. Individuals with low IQs are not only challenged with their learning disability, many also struggle with behavioral health disorders that have never been addressed. At Broadstep, I believe we can build the right continuum of care and align with great community partners, health systems, and payers to help address these needs.”

According to Dr. Scott Huntington, Ph.D., Broadstep’s Chief Clinical Officer and former corrections system psychologist, undiagnosed and untreated behavioral health disabilities weigh heavily on the judicial system, with many individuals in prison. “Putting their quality of life in jail aside for a moment, the cost to keep and treat individuals in prison is three times the amount of those not incarcerated. This person, this child, this adult, is struggling, and we believe we have the opportunity within this healthcare system and with our partners to tackle these challenges. We want to make sure they can live a good quality, productive life and be an additive back to their communities.”

When access to care is provided to this population, the positive impact is undeniable. According to a recent study by the American Journal on Public Health, Americans living with disabilities with no home support system receive less preventive care, have a higher incidence of chronic conditions, and visit the hospital and emergency department more often — leading to much higher health care spending than for the average adult.

RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA – North Carolina-based Broadstep Behavioral Health, a Bain Capital Double Impact company, has acquired Pinelands Group Homes, located in South Carolina. This purchase follows Broadstep’s acquisition in January of Excalibur Youth Services, also headquartered in the Palmetto State.

Founded in 1972, Broadstep is a leading national provider serving children, adults, and families with a range of services that support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), mental illness, and co-occurring disorders. With twin missions to expand expert care and quality services to families in need, the Pinelands acquisition is joining more than ninety existing Broadstep locations in Illinois, New Jersey, Nebraska, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Wisconsin.

The Case for Inclusion, released annually by the Ancor Foundation and UCP, reveals a waiting list for home and community-based services exceeding 470,000 people in the United States – including over 10,400 in South Carolina. Service capacity in South Carolina would need to double to meet current demand in the state, according to the 2020 report. The Case for Inclusion is one of the nation’s leading sources of data assessment of services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA – North Carolina-based Broadstep Behavioral Health, Inc., part of the Bain Capital Double Impact Fund portfolio, announced today its acquisition of South Carolina-based provider, Excalibur Youth Services LLC.

Relocating its headquarters from Wisconsin to North Carolina in 2020, Broadstep is a leading national provider of residential and community-based services to individuals with intellectual, developmental, and behavioral health conditions, including autism, mental illness, and I/DD (intellectual and developmental disabilities).

During its 49-year history, Broadstep has grown to over 90 facilities serving more than 1,300 individuals in Wisconsin, Illinois, South Carolina, New Jersey, and Nebraska. On December 31, 2020, Broadstep announced further expansion in Wisconsin through the acquisition of Good Hope Manor, an assisted living provider serving mentally ill individuals with chronic and often debilitating medical conditions.

Excalibur, initially founded in 1989 as Avalonia Group Homes Inc., provides residential treatment services to I/DD and severely mentally ill populations throughout SC and a growing presence in NC.
