Asia-Pacific Trends in Private Equity Fund Investments

The Asia-Pacific region is one area of renewed growth in private equity fund investment as identified in a September 2012 McKinsey & Company report. From 2008 to 2010, there was a sustained drought in private equity deals in that part of the world, as manufacturing contracted and once-vital expansion prospects dimmed. The McKinsey report on the region notes that 2011 marked an upturn in deal making, which has continued to accelerate with fundraising via investment groups becoming significantly easier. This growth would potentially have been even stronger except for a tendency among financial institutions to hoard capital amid the ongoing economic uncertainty in Europe. Another caveat to the renewed investor focus on the Asia-Pacific region is that once an investment position is taken, it may be relatively difficult to change course.
