ABOUT
Ironically, this project "rose from ruins", in a way the same as the DDR state. Arriving in Berlin in 2009, I felt the presence of ruins everywhere. It was a new experience to watch these places and structures. I started to search them up, and soon discovered some of their magical beauty, but also their sad destinies opposed to their previous greatness. One thing they had in common was that they could all be traced back to the same event: The end of DDR, a country that had stopped existing more than 20 years earlier.
The major important events had of course occurred decades before, but it was still evident that I was in a place that had seen enormous changes. Changes I had neither relations to, nor historical knowledge of. Instead of only focusing on ruins, I wanted to make a kind of compilation of these type of discoveries. All with the same common thread; the fall of communism in East Germany, and the aftermath. It felt important to do it, to document it while it was still there.
Eventually, this project is a journey based upon pure curiosity.The pictures are a compilation of different stories, quiet tales. Through them I have tried to visualize the the vacuum of a lost country, and to find meeting points between past and present. They are all individual stories, but somehow they are all in their own way strongly rooted to the DDR.
