How Island Harvest Helps Children in Long Island

With decades of experience running his Long Island, NY construction company, Arthur Godsell is a busy member of his community. Arthur Godsell has lived in New York for many years and gives donations to many local causes, including Island Harvest.

Island Harvest is a food bank that was founded by Linda Breitstone in 1992 with just a cooler and a station wagon. Since its inception, Island Harvest has built a network of almost 600 Long Island organizations to help serve over 100 million meals. The main focus of Island Harvest is to help children, starts with the kid’s weekend backpack program. The program partners with 27 schools in Long Island's vulnerable areas to deliver 1000 packs of food each week, including ingredients for meals to cook at home with their families.

The school pantry program is active in 35 different schools and provides schoolchildren with food throughout the year. What makes this program different is that it gives the food away discretely to help children avoid the stigma of using food accessibility services. Island Harvest also has a summer food service program that helps families and their children get healthy breakfast and lunch throughout the summer. It also includes nutritional education. The youth produce project delivers fresh harvest to different agencies on a bi-weekly basis and offers youth education and preparation training.
