Education

My strengths help with organizing and executing set visions and goals for projects. My education and training have prepared me with the best methods of designing and engaging learners. By using strategies from Trends and Issues in Instructional Design and Technology, I have enhanced my skill set to capturing and holding learner’s attention. This course Strategies for Learner Engagement has attributed to me gaining better curriculum designs with the use of the latest technology.

I’ve also have improved on motivational methodologies on improving learner engagement. Using curiosity in my programming and curriculum to spark interest with learner’s engagement has improved the interaction between myself and students. According to Dempsey and Keller, “Curiosity is aroused by uncertainty or a desire to close a perceived gap in one’s knowledge due to such things as unanswered questions or unresolved conflicts” (Reiser, Dempsey. 2018, pp.78-86).

One technology program I’ve researched during the course was 3D Modeling for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder by Christina Guo who has developed a product called Little You (How Learning 3D modeling Can Benefit Kids on the Autism Spectrum 2020). The program uses the computer to help the students express their emotions by designing little replicas of themselves. It's an innovative way to see deeper into their individual worlds. Just as Christina Guo has expressed and I believe, “disability is not inability” (How Learning 3D Modeling Can Benefit Kids on the Autism Spectrum 2020).

WEAKNESSES
Overly detailed Oriented
Direct
Matter of fact approach

As a personality of being extroverted in public others seem at times intimidated by my presence. I have a strong personality that at times overshadows peers that I may be working with and gives off a dominating scenario when I’m a proactive team member that believes in group support. I’ve always tried to be direct with people so there aren’t any misunderstandings. However, I could be a little more gentler with my delivery, so it doesn’t seem as harsh when speaking about different topics.

I can be matter of fact at times which can be off putting for others that maybe seeking a softer and emotional landing when dealing with execution of duties. I've been working on strategies to allow other team members that aren’t in managerial positions to suggest strategies on progress and execution steps. “Using collaborative project management software is an ideal way to keep everyone working as a team while keeping sight of primary objectives” (Caietti, 2020). The 10 Strategies to Promote Successful Project Execution has been very helpful in interoffice management and relationship building (Caietti, 2020). These same strategies can be used with setting learner’s in charge of helping with instructional design in the class. According to Keller and Deimann (2018), Motivation to learn is promoted when learners anticipate and experience satisfying outcomes to a learning task.

Opportunities
Since the beginning of 2020 when the COVID-19 has tragically hit the globe, there’s been a shift with virtual learning interactions. There has been an increase with on-line learning as students have moved to virtual learning as an alternative to in-person learning for school. “The COVID-19 has resulted in schools shut all across the world. Globally, over 1.2 billion children are out of the classroom” (Written by Cathy Li). This has opened the need of more Instructional Designer’s and the use of new technology to keep up with the new massive numbers of students.

According to Dempsey and Keller, there are two major requirements for establishing a systematic approach to motivational design. The first is to understand the major elements of human motivation and volition, and the second is to employ a design process that assists in diagnosing learner’s motivational requirements and prescribing appropriate tactics (Reiser, Dempsey. 2018, pp.78-86). By designing new motivative technology for a target market that is highly saturated with new consumers is an ideal positioning for opportunity.

Threats
Students lacking access to technology
Students lacking access to equipment
Internet outages
Lack of funding

The threats of reaching and engaging learners have some major obstacles this year 2020 like never before that can or could harmfully prevent a successful outcome. There’re are financial problems as well as a pandemic going on. Directly within the educational system, they're serious wealth gaps preventing students from access to technology and equipment, especially in the minority communities.

“The “homework gap” – which refers to school-age children lacking the connectivity they need to complete schoolwork at home – is more pronounced for black, Hispanic and lower-income households” (Auxier & Anderson, 2020). The lack of access is causing a threat to the productivity of students that are desiring to learn but are unable to gain the necessary tools to do so. According to Auxier & Anderson, school-age children in lower-income households are especially likely to lack broadband access. Roughly one-third (35%) of households with children ages 6 to 17 and an annual income below $30,000 a year do not have a high-speed internet connection at home, compared with just 6% of such households earning $75,000 or more a year. (Auxier & Anderson, 2020)

One of the five motivational strategies from Trends and Issues in Instructional Design and Technology states that “Motivation to learn is promoted when learners believe they can succeed in mastering the learning task” (Reiser 81). Without access to students, their motivation and loss of interest will be directly related once the belief of not being able to master their task sets in. In turn, the learner's desire for education will diminish and so will the need for additional Instructional Designer.
