The Mysore Palace, built in the 14th century as a wooden fortress, burned down in the late 19th century and was reconstructed in granite and pink marble. A classic example of Indo-Saracenic architecture, the three-story palace reflects Indian traditions as well as British colonial aesthetics and has neo-classical, Indo-Islamic, and Gothic revival elements in its unique architecture.
Now serving as a museum, the palace’s elegantly ornate interior contains lavish features such as incised mahogany ceilings and solid silver doors. Among the permanent exhibits are traditional weapons, musical instruments, and royal dress, as well as a collection of renowned paintings that includes Raja Ravi Verma’s revered depiction of the Hindu Goddess Shakthi in her eight manifestations.
