Exploring Mysore Palace in One of India’s Historic

David T. Ball of Dallas, Texas, considers travel one of his favorite activities. One of David T. Ball’s memorable travel destinations is India, where he explored several hubs in a culturally and geographically diverse landscape.

Mysore, in the state of Karnataka, is a locus of tradition that reflects its historical significance as the home of the Wadiyar dynasty for centuries. The Mysore Palace, built in the 14th century as a wooden fortress, burned down in the late 19th century and was reconstructed in granite and pink marble. A classic example of Indo-Saracenic architecture, the three-story palace reflects Indian traditions as well as British colonial aesthetics and has neo-classical, Indo-Islamic, and Gothic revival elements in its unique architecture.

Now serving as a museum, the palace’s elegantly ornate interior contains lavish features such as incised mahogany ceilings and solid silver doors. Among the permanent exhibits are traditional weapons, musical instruments, and royal dress, as well as a collection of renowned paintings that includes Raja Ravi Verma’s revered depiction of the Hindu Goddess Shakthi in her eight manifestations.

Beyond the central palace, Mysore offers numerous other historical edifices to explore, including the Gun House, the Clock Tower, the Royal Orchid Metropole, and the Jaganmohan Palace.
