Pura Tanah Lot-Balinese Temple Protected by a Sea Snake

An active member of his local community in Texas, David T. Ball volunteers for several charities. An avid traveler, David T. Ball spent 200 days in hotels in 2016 while traveling to different places around the world. In 2018, he visited Bali, where he had the chance to visit some of the island's many temples such as the Tanah Lot temple.

Tanah Lot temple is located in Tabanan, on top of a large rock just off the shore which can be reached by foot only when the tide is low. Tanah Lot means “land in the sea” and appears to float on water when the tide is high.

Tanah Lot is one of seven sea temples in Bali that are located along the south-western coast of the island. The deity worshipped in this temple is Bhatara Segara, the sea god or sea power. The temple is attributed to the work of Dang Hyang Nirartha, a Hindu traveler that arrived on the rock island during one of his trips and decided to have a shrine built for the Balinese sea gods.

Legend has it that venomous sea snakes are guarding the temple against evil spirits with one giant snake being the main protector of the holy place. Every year, the temple attracts thousands of visitors and can be reached within less than one hour of driving from Denpasar or Ubud.
