Childhood Obesity Project

How we got Started

We are a team of graphic design graduate students in the Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art at Georgia Southern University.
We were involved in a group project in our design activism class that focuses on applying a service design model to an existing problem to affect change.

We were tasked with fully exploring a problem that results in a successful solution that can sustain past our initial involvement.
Through our initial research we have identified childhood obesity as a demanding problem in the state of Georgia.

The National Center for Health Statistics found that across the country in children between 2-5 years of age, obesity increased from 5.0% to 12.1 % between 1976-1980 and 2009-2012 it increased from 6.5% to 18% among those aged 6-11. This represents a 200% increase in obese children within the last three years.

Through observations looking at the Burke County School System food provisions it was considered "too perfect". With the time we had we couldn't make obvious changes in their household. We agreed that best solution was to increase movement. However, whatever we decided could not impede on the children's learning experience, so we decided to create physical games in relation to the Georgia Department of Education's standards.
