If A Girl Writes Off The World (Sage Francis)

In 2006-7 I did a massive project illustrating the words of US rapper/spoken word poet Sage Francis called 'If A Girl Writes Off The World'. It was the biggest thing I'd ever done, and was a huge undertaking involving the sourcing of exhibition spaces in East London, central Manhattan and Rhode Island. We flew Sage over to open the show a few days before Hallowe'en, and at his opening speech and ensuing performance you could hear a pin drop. He was joined by BDolan and Tom Inhaler at the NYC and Providence shows.

The majority of the pieces were three-dimensional, and the collection of work grew as it was taken to New York and Rhode Island. The show led to many pivotal developments including my signing with my American agency, new friends stateside and a life-long relationship with Sage himself, one of the most gently creative and hardworking people we know, along with his extensive network of friends and colleagues.

Some brave lady in the US turned this into a huge tattoo occupying all of the left side of her body.

Everything in this room had meaning and symbolism drawn from Sage's lyrics. But you needed to lean in close...

This piece was constructed with more than 2000 hand-glued Swarovski crystals and pieces of jewellery.

Collaboration with world-renowned horror dill artist Beth Robinson / strangedolls.net for the track 'Broken Wings'.

The piece from which the title of the exhibition was drawn.

My Mum cross-stitched this for me!
