Invitation for Nelson Ramos' exhibition
The exhibition “Desde las Entrañas” (From the Gut) by Nelson Ramos was held for the opening of the Iturria Foundation at its headquarters in Carrasco.
The work exhibited in this homage to one of the major Uruguayan artists consisted mainly in his last period, characterized by plane surfaces of layers of different accumulated papers, ragged in predominantly vertical lines, uncovering, as a slit, the interior –the gut– of the work. It is also from the gut that this exhibition was conceived, for Ramos was Ignacio Iturria’s great master.
The title’s double meaning served as a trigger for the creation and design we devised for the invite to the opening. The guests received a sealed envelope intervened by nothing but a vertical slit on the front, hand-painted on top with a yellow line. The envelope had to be torn from this cut to see what was inside: a folded insert in which the first thing that could be seen was a painting by Ramos, also made of torn paper, with the title and date of the exhibition.
This reinterpretation of Nelson Ramos’ work aimed at the interaction of the public with the artist. “This vertical line by Ramos, what is it, what is the meaning of it and what was it drawn for? A slit? And, in such case, why was it executed and what for? A road, perhaps. And if this was the case, what geography does it unfold around objects? Where does it lead to?"

La muestra Desde las Entrañas de Nelson Ramos se realizó para la inauguración de la Fundación Iturria en su sede de Carrasco.
La obra expuesta en este homenaje a uno de los más grandes artistas uruguayos consistió principalmente de su último periodo, caracterizado por superficies planas de capas de diferentes papeles acumulados y rasgados en líneas predominantemente verticales, descubriendo, como un tajo, el interior -las entrañas- de la obra. Desde las entrañas es también que se concibió esta muestra, ya que Ramos fue el gran maestro de Ignacio Iturria.
Esta doble significación del título sirvió como disparador para la creación y el diseño que realizamos para la invitación a la inauguración. Los invitados recibieron un sobre sellado intervenido únicamente por un tajo vertical en su frente, pintado a mano por arriba con una línea amarilla. El sobre debía ser desgarrado desde este corte para ver lo que había en su interior: un desplegable en que lo primero que se veía era un cuadro de Ramos, también de papel desgarrado, con el título de la muestra y la fecha.
Esta reinterpretación de la obra de Nelson Ramos buscaba la interacción del público con el artista.
"Esta línea vertical de Ramos ¿qué es, qué significado tiene y para qué se trazó? ¿Un tajo?
Y, en tal caso, ¿por qué y para qué fue ejecutado? Quizá un camino. Y si así fuera, ¿qué geografía despliega alrededor de los objetos? ¿A dónde conduce?"
