As I have understood my practice of photography, it satisfies a fixation to collect the visual found in public  places. Before mobile phones had suitable cameras I formed the habit of carrying a small 35mm or digital camera everywhere such that I might capture something (a practice I have adopted from Andy Warhol and designer David Carson). Loyal to no device in particular, the aim is to have a means of capturing subjects at the moment of discovery. The practice is candid. Usually while walking in a city. More often when visiting a place for the first time—this is when I am most aware of the surroundings. It is without a preconception of the subjects that will be photographed, but generally they will be graphic in form: architecture, sight lines, patterns, symbols, and typefaces. People seldomly. The subjects are entirely linked to my career in graphic design. The practice, however, has a kinship with the visual anthropologist—one who is involved in documentation to aid in the interpretation of visual form and cultural function of signs and symbols.
