I work to create an environment that addresses active engagement for a new generation of learners, with an awareness of the ever-diversifying design field. A framework for approaching this goal was outlined in an address by design educator Meredith Davis, which I regularly return to as a source of inspiration. Davis cautions young and future faculty, that “your generation will need to do more. That you cannot simply follow the patterns of your own education. That you will have to design learning for the twenty-first century.”

Design is a team sport and collaboration is essential. For educators and students alike, the university is best situated to provide opportunities to meet, share, discuss, and learn from one another. As future practitioners my students will have to work with people in teams and I foster this learning through student participation in small groups.

Design finds itself connecting to other disciplines in the pursuit of addressing contemporary problems. As John Thackara writes, “Learning happens best when people participate in different communities of practice.” This learning happens in my studio through explorations of applied design, inviting outside voices into my classroom, and assigning course work in the context of contemporary problems.
