A minute before the new year
Novy God is the Russian phrase for "New Year".Ā In Russia, the New Year is often grander and even more widely celebrated than Christmas. Instead of a Christmas tree, unlike in Western countries, Russians decorate a New Year tree (although this tree is the same). Families and friends gather to celebrate this holiday. Dinner usually starts late on December 31.Traditional dishes include several types of salads (Olivier required), caviar, tangerines and sparkling wine. A pre-recorded address by the countryās president appears on TV, listing the achievements of the past year, at 23:55. Many people watch his address and welcome a new year by sayingĀ āS Novim Godomā (Š” ŠŠ¾Š²ŃŠ¼ Š³Š¾Š“Š¾Š¼) to the chiming of the Kremlin clock. The Russian national anthem begins at midnight and people congratulate each other and exchange presents. Then people take to the streets to light sparklers and fireworks.
