This project came about
This project came about my desire to do a photographic interpretation of the infamous makeup that is iconic with the Mexican festival of the Day of the Dead usually celebrated between 31 October to 4 November.
However, my point of difference was to represent each makeup through a traditional latin american character that is represented either in latin american art, folklore, culture and literature. So I drew on my studies of latin america and represented 6 icons for me in latin culture. The virginal bride (la Novia), the Witch/ the seductress (La Bruja), the labourer/ field worker (La Campesina) who represents the poor working class, the Upper Class lady (La Catrina) and of course I had to represent the origins of Mexican culture going back to the Aztecs and then to their most iconic lady in art and popular culture, Frida Kahlo.
