What you see in the image is a woman wearing the traditional Arabic style "Abaya" with a label on her that has the word EXPiration, just like we see the EXP dates on products, and the word "divorced woman" in Arabic.

Divorce, although allowed in Islam, is still a social taboo for women. Divorce still carries stigma with it for a woman but not for the man in our society! A divorced woman is like an expired good. Here in Kuwait, women find it difficult to cope after they separate from their spouses. Not only does the family of that woman see her differently, but also, the society! Families don't want their daughters mingling with a divorced woman! The man gets away with no stigma, no nothing. He marries again. It’s harder for a divorced woman to remarry because society sees her responsible for the failure of the marriage.

After getting a divorce, living in an apartment away from family is not favored and not even a choice for most women to make because the girl’s parents and society will tell you this sentence: “You are a girl, it is not acceptable”. Parents worry how the society will talk negatively because that is against what is traditional. People still think of what others will say and how society will judge a woman that chooses to live alone and not with her family after her divorce.

If a divorced woman decides to live with her parents she will be enduring a lot. She will still be treated like a minor, meaning, she will have a curfew, she will have to inform her family anytime she wants to go out about the place and the company with her.

Is it fair for a grown woman to be seen differently than a man just because she is divorced? Is it fair that she gets a different treatment than a divorced man, not a better one, or even an equal treatment! Life does not stop if two decide to separate. A woman’s life does not need more pressure from family and society! Accept facts, move on, and above all support your loved ones.
