A dragon is a large, serpentine creature that appears in the folklore of many cultures around the world. Beliefs about dragons vary considerably through regions, but dragons in western cultures since the High Middle Ages have often been depicted as winged and capable of breathing fire.
In Norse mythology an elf is a human-like creature, they are divided into good and bad elves. In medieval Germanic-speaking cultures, elves have been thought of as beings with magical powers and supernatural beauty, ambivalent towards everyday people and capable of either helping or hindering them.
An orc is a humanoid creature akin to a goblin. Mythological monsters with names similar to "orc" can be found in the Old English poem Beowulf, in Early Modern poetry, and in Northern European folk tales and fairy tales. Orcs were brought into modern usage by the fantasy writings of J. R. R. Tolkien.
In Scandinavian mythology and folklore, the term dwarf denoted a species of fairy inhabiting the interiors of mountains and the lower levels of mines. Dwarfs were of various types, all of small stature, sometimes beautiful, but more usually they resembled old men with long beards and humped backs.
