Quentin Young IM 113 Assignment 1

This image was taken outside Geisert when my friend Jake came to pick me up. I was not able to get close enough to any of the players, so Jake's serious portrait was selected next.
CLOSE-UP: In this edit, I played with the brightness and contrast to really make the grass come out. The sun was very bright so I wanted the light shaft and the shadows to stand out as well, so I utilized the curves. I then sharpened his eyes, and used the spot healing tool to take off some of his facial imperfections and mustache.
This was taken during the warm-ups before the game, and got my interest when the ball rolled over closer to the spectators than normal.
LANDSCAPE: With the trees in the background and all of the players going about their drills, the need for color was lost on me and I wanted to make it seem very simple to reflect the mood of the players. I used the pen tool to transfer the ball to another layer, then added some outer and inner glow to the ball to make it stand out in the black and white landscape. I used the brush tool to add a darker shadow to the ball. Like always, I used the curves to get the colors right where I wanted them. I trimmed off all the extra grass on the bottom to focus more and make the picture seem wider.
This is a picture of one of ICC's players catching the ball, about to throw it in. I never planned on using it but it shows the lead up to the throw in well, with both people in the picture looking downfield.
There really wasn't any cloud coverage that day, but i wanted to make the clouds stand out so I played with the hue, saturation and brightness to make them appear better. I then used the pen tool to transfer all of his white clothing to another layer, grouped them, then applied a layer with outerglow, all to make sure he seemed brighter and "better". I trimmed just slightly on the sides to make it look better.
One of my favorite pictures, this was taken as an ICC player took a shot from just past the half line. The aggresive stance as he kicked it is what brought my attention, along with the goalkeeper appearing alone in the right half of the picture.
ACTION-SHOT: I really wanted to make sure that the connection between the shooter and the goalkeeper came across clear here, so I blurred out everthing except the ball and the two players, then sharpened them to make them seem crisp. As always, I used curves, exposure and saturation to make sure the green came across true. I also cropped the size down as well.
This was taken right as I arrived at the field. Like I said, it was a really sunny day and the ball was in a pretty good spot to play off the sun.
RULE OF THIRDS: For this one, I played with the saturation, curves, and vibrance quite a bit, making the grass pop. I then cropped out the FIFA logo, and reinserted it with and Inner Glow effect and a Bevel, to fully accentuate the brand which any college player wants to be a part of.
This shot was taken somewhere in the middle of the game, and I never thought to use it due to the ball being very blurry. However, once I saw how the twin lights were in the picture, and the two players side by side, I really wanted to emphasis the symmetry.
SYMMETRY: As the light's started to turn on, the game was getting harder and harder to see, and there really wasn't a chance for an iconic sunset picture, so I went in and played with the saturation and curves until I was able to accentuate the small orange in the sky that was from the sunset. I then added a gradient and lined it up with number 5's natural body shape. A small amount was cropped out of the sides of the picture to make the picture seem more symmetrical, with the lights defining the symmetry.
