ASPCA Issues Advisory for Pets for Cooler Weather

New Orleans-based Zachary Addison left his job as a restaurant manager to enter into an apprenticeship with Boudreaux Builders in Madisonville, where he is learning about residential and commercial construction. Outside his apprenticeship, Zachary Addison supports the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to animals, also known as ASPCA.

In early November 2020, ASPCA issued advisories to pet owners regarding the dangers that lurk as the weather gets cooler. Primarily known for its humane platform toward the treatment of all animals, ASPCA also issues advisories to help pet owners care for their animals.

ASPCA advises pet owners to secure rodenticides to avoid pets from accidentally tampering with them and being poisoned. Rats and other rodents tend to seek shelter in the cooler months, necessitating the use of these harmful chemicals, but carefully securing them can prevent pets from ingesting these poisons.

Another advisory relates to wildlife that pets might encounter as the weather cools in the fall. Snakes, for example, seek places to hibernate during this time, and depending on the geographic location, some snakes might be venomous. Moreover, domestic pets might not be aware of the dangers, so keeping pets away for common areas for hibernation such as caves, tree stumps, and holes borrowed by squirrels can prevent them from getting bitten.

Finally, fall is one of the seasons when mushrooms appear. While most mushrooms are not toxic, there is the one percent that is highly toxic, causing major health conditions in pets. Being aware of the areas where they grow and keeping pets away from these areas can reduce the risk of pets accidentally ingesting poisonous mushrooms.
