Startup Weekend 2015

I got the opportunity to serve as lead designer for Google’s Startup Weekend in 2015 and 2016. I also served as a consultant on site for design teams who didn’t have anyone graphically inclined to create logos, word marks, or stylized pitch decks. As the lead designer, I consulted with all groups participating to help build brand identity, and helped students in other fields understand the importance of identity design.

My initial concept for the art below plays off of Google’s “test tube” theme, where in a group of people are pushed together to create something greater than themselves- i.e. a company or non-profit. Below, the illustration reflects the process that students undergo through the 54 hour challenge, in which they are tasked with using their unique skill sets to form a cohesive organization with a clear direction and monetization model. I tried to mirror this process with the flow of liquid (skills) through a series of test tubes (people) to produce an end result (a company).

Hope you enjoy, it was a lot of fun.

Butler Box

Butler box was a startup that offered laundry and dry cleaning pickup and delivery services to high end clientele. From a rough initial sketch the group provided me, I worked up a few concepts and they settled on literally “the butler in a box”. Unlike most laundry services, I hoped to help them stand apart, perhaps enticing a larger portion of their target market. They were fairly picky, and we tried out numerous concepts before settling.  I love the graphic end result that they agreed upon, and the mark is bold, modern, and just slightly tech, setting them apart from other similar services.

Doughnation was a startup founded by 5 IU Kelley School of Business Students at SW 15’

Their aim was to turn the excess food thrown away at restaurants into a tax deduction or credit by donating it to homeless shelters. While the monetization model seemed a bit convoluted, I worked with them to create a logo ark, consisting of a partially eaten donut, half of which resembles nickels, quarters and pennies, while the other half represents the uneaten food.

Their tag line was “It takes sense to make change”
