VRida Virtual- / Augmented Reality HMD

VRida Virtual- / Augmented Reality HMD
VRida is a head mounted display (HMD) that can be used for both virtual and augmented reality applications. It was designed to showcase Fraunhofer Institute's micro OLED technology which is used for the displays. The design was built as a working prototype for exhibitions using 3D-printing.

Research & Testing
Before sketching a single line, extensive research was done focussing on ergonomics of head mounted displays and human head anthropometry. Building on that research, different functional prototypes were built with the special requirements for using such a device at exhibitions in mind. Fraunhofer's technology package was also to be considered.

Sketches
The research showed that attaching a "floating" HMD-package to an adjustable headband was ergonomically the best assembly for this device. Sketches were than made on top of that package, which also integrates an exchangable visor that enables both VR (opaque visor) and AR (transparent visor).

3D Model
The device was modelled with rapid prototyping and a simple (dis)assembly for maintenance in mind. It features adjustments for the users' eye distance, eye position and head circumference. It can also be used wearing glasses.

Working Prototype
The finished VRida model was used at various exhibitions to showcase Fraunhofer Institute's technology. The ergonomics including the previously described adjustments make it a comfortable device for a wide range of users, ranging from the fifth female percentile to the 95th male percentile.
