Water Temple 2012 Build Workshop

Water Temple : MED Workshop : Slovenia : August 2012

The annual MEDs workshop brings together design students from across Europe for ten days.
The Water Temple group, led by Kieran Donnellan, was challenged to build a waterside community pavilion using CNC technology and experimenting with the sensual experience of the site next to the Ljubljanica River.

More information about the project can be found at:

We were teamed with local construction company DA-MA-Haus, who specialise in timber building, using traditional jointing made possible by CNC technology.

We spent time at their workshop, cutting the components for the pavilion and learning about the jointing techniques that they employ:  http://www.dama-haus.si
The walls of the pavilion were simple stud walls with dovetail joints to reduce fixings.
Although the panels were assembled on site due to transport constraints, they could have easily been prefabricated at the workshop. The finished panels were then placed and fixed on the foundations by the team.
The timber cladding wrapped around the perimeter of the pavilion and was double layered and glued for strength.
In order that DA-MA-Haus could move the pavilion the cladding was designed to be screwed together and taken apart without damaging it.
The cladding had to be soaked in the river in order to soften it without the use of steam to create enough curve to match the profile of the pavilion.
