Architecture
Just because I love architecture.
This project is a collection of images I've captured along the way of buildings and architectural designs that have caught my eye. Being fascinated by what can be achieved in architecture, I'm forever snapping off more photos, so it made sense to have a separate gallery just for these shots, and I shall continue to upload more over time.
The Shot Tower Museum in Melbourne Central. Everyone with the slightest interest in design, who's every visited Melbourne, has a version of this shot in their portfolio, but it's just a wonderful piece of design, protecting and modernising something of historical significance in a way you rarely see in Australia.
Flinders Street Train Station at dusk.
You can't have photographs of Melbourne without one of them featuring the historic W-class trams, introduced to service in Melbourne in 1923 and still operating in various capacities today.
Because I'm terrible at this game, I forget who this chap is, but I love his perspective on the Sidney Myer Music Bowl and the CBD of Melbourne. Side note: Sidney Myer (founder of the famous retail department store) was actually born Simcha Myer Baevski, and was introduced to the world in what is now Belarus, migrating to Melbourne in 1899.
I just couldn't resist a long exposure shot of my beloved Melbourne at night. The prominent golden lights in this image were part of the 2011/2012 new year celebrations when the city turned to gold for the night, with numerous buildings across the city gilded and lit up for the occasion. Taken from the Princes Bridge.
A different angle on Melbourne by night, from Birrarung Marr park, looking towards Southbank and the Arts Precint.
Melbourne CBD shot from the edge of the Melbourne Arts Centre.
Another over-photographed icon of Australia, but in my opinion, the Sydney Opera House really is as spectacular as the pictures and hype lead you to believe. In incredible structure, that just pops nicely in this photo with longer exposure helping it to stand out against the night sky.
Another long exposure shot, this time as a couple of boats passed in the foreground.
The Opera House as viewed from the Harbour Bridge, through the safety fence.
Sydney Harbour Bridge towards sunset.
Since I was taking pictures of the Opera House, I didn't want the Harbour Bridge to feel left out...
A staircase in The Rocks in Sydney. I just like the shapes and the way the light fell on it.
The stunning Palacio de congresos building in Oviedo, Asturias, northern Spain, designed by Santiago Calatrava, and known affectionately by the locals as 'el cangrejo' ('The Crab') for its unusual shape. The sheer scale of the place is something that is simply impossible to capture when visiting, as it dwarfs everything around it, taking up an entire city block, and you simply can't get far enough away in order to fit it in one photo. One day I shall return in a helicopter to capture just how collossal a structure it is. For now, search on Google and you can see for yourselves.
Another abstract view of the Calatrava building.
I just love the way the lines interveave and dance with each other. I spent almost an entire day just circling the place, taking different shots and appreciating the different perspectives you can get.
Another side to Calatrava's palacio de congresos.
A close-up of part of the Calatrava building's construction.
Some scaffolding I encountered while walking back from the Calatrava icon, preventing the walls on either side from collapsing in.
A shot of one of the bridges at San Francisco. Sadly the Golden Gate was hiding in the clouds while I was there, but this one was nonetheless impressive.
The viewing deck area high above Queenstown in NZ. I liked the stark lines of the glass and metal contrasting and merging with the softness of the stunning scenery around.
I've come to the conclusion that this was probably Hong Kong airport...
The London Eye up close.
Another view of the London Eye.
And for something totally different, classic St Andrews architecture, taken from the pier back towards the town, with the iconic St Andrews cathedral in the background. Makes me really miss the place, seeing this view...
Another view of the cathedral and the famous St Rules Tower framing the Scottish flag, with the only edit being the colour obviously removed from all but the flag. I somehow managed never to go up the tower - I need to get back st St Andrews so I can climb it...as well as for all the other reasons I want to go back!
