Singapore Grand Prix 2020

Singapore Grand Prix 2020
The annual Singapore Grand Prix was cancelled this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

I was approached to do a 360 illustration imagining if the 20 Formula drivers are in Singapore instead for this year. The illustration is to depict the F1 drivers exploring Singapore's hawker culture, its architecture and more. The setting based on the areas around the Singapore River, featuring some iconic landmarks such as the Marina Bay Sands, the National Gallery, Victoria Memorial Hall and shophouses along Circular Road.
This was quite a fun project to work on, to put all the 20 drivers into one illustration and also have several of the major Singapore attractions composed together. Some of the thoughts behind the piece : How to show hawker culture next to the Singapore River and still make sense without it looking like a outdoor banquet? and How to blend the shophouses together into a Singapore River scene?

There were at least three to fourth variations on the composition and we went with this in end, feeling that it has a balance of showcasing most of the Singaporean landmarks, the river and even intimacy for the shophouses + coffeeshop scene.

The shophouses are based on the ones around Clarke Quay and Cross Street which are more suited to this riverside landscape compared to a ornate one at Koon Seng Road or Balestier Road which were in some of the earlier variations. The makan makan scenes are based on a mix of the Makansutra Gluttons Bay, Newton Food Centre, Lau Pa Sat and Satay by the Bay.

Managed to add in the new Apple Store just in time for the final artwork as well.
