This week we had to create a 5 panel comic strip that tells the story of something that happened at school. It's been a fair while since I was there so I figure I could do the most memorable and perhaps regrettable thing that happened. This does contain drug use but to be fair their was no rules against it, so content warning.
First I sketched out in pencil the layout and how the five panels would pan out and interact with each other. I then drew over it in ink one by one. I decided to keep it black and white and relatively simple, leaving small artistic decisions like the inky blobs and line work for detail. I stuck to using very careful hatching straight hatching for this project. I decided I wanted the images within the panels to go outside the panel border for a more dynamic and visually interesting look. I made the decision to go free hand on the borders as well to enforce a playful vibe.
My main idea was to tell the story through captions on the images rather than speech bubbles because I thought it would help the story make more sense. However if I wanted to really push myself I could have tried using just speech bubbles rather than relying on explicitly telling the story. That would have let the images speak more on their own. However with only 5 panels to work with, I felt like I needed the story to be told 'efficiently'.
Overall I'm really happy with how this comic turned out, I think perhaps a black background would make the panels jump out even more. Ink pens are normally my weapon of choice so I could have experimented more out of my comfort zone if I wanted to push myself.
