<< To the North >>

To the North refers to the large scale of nordic experiences that I dived into during my internship in Sweden in February-July 2020. It was the time of making listening sessions in the kitchen and experimenting with melodies of the old folk songs from the Northern Russian tradition of singing.

The reason why voice and music became a significant core of this project relates to the opportunity of listening inside and outside world which I got the luxury to perceive. Through the practice of careful listening, investigating Nordic mythology, playing, and learning more about my mother tongue, the Russian language, I discovered a bridge-building model for my artistic practice.

<< To the North >> is indeed a performative sound experience that may bring you into synesthesia of motion, singing, observing the environment and your personal memories.
Work with the performance and the actual album ‘To the North’ is still in work-in-progress.
It includes several phases:
Testing and playing with vocal techniques,
Researching the original lyrics and singers of the Northern Russian songs
Enhancing the knowledge about Nordic mythology and archeology
Checking and discussing the main milestones with the mentors (singing experts)
Looking for a rehearsal space

Questions which I am reaching to answer through this work:
Voice or with instruments?
What is the entrance in the piece?
Which technique I am working with (glottal sound; or clarity of tone; or streching of tone; or extreme high or low range or fast changes in register)?
What sound do I want to reach?
Which impression do I want to transmit?
What will be the overall style of the performance/album?
Where am I in this?
