Summer Camps 2012

Salt Dough Animals: As part of the animal week of summer camps, the young people were asked to create their own creatures, first they had to close there eyes, picture their favorite animals. Then sketch it out, focus on the colours, shapes size of the animals. Make the salt dough recipe and divide the dough out among the kids. Now ask the kids to shape their creatures.

Special Note: I did this workshop one to one with a child who had Aspergers and he loved it, the key is for the facilitator to think of the way the child approaches the project, the boy I was working with wanted to create a tiger like mine, mid way through he got frustrated and tried to get me to do the work, I just showed him the motions my hands were doing to create the legs and I insisted gently that he continue. Once finished we baked it. The mother was there whole time and was amazed by how focused he had become to creating the salt dough tiger.
Animal pillows: focusing on extinct animals: using fabric pastels and paints. Start by have the children research extinct animals, I had a collection of old "ranger ricks" which were a great visual source for them, ask the kids to draw their ideas out on paper first. then lay out the squares of fabric (I used an old white sheet!!). Use an Iron to fix the colours, and then help the kids sew around the pieces (plain side at the back, art facing inside out,sew seams make sure to leave a gap). Stuff with wadding, then sew to seal.
