Exploring economics, Earth Day and the environment in the May issue of the world’s leading environmental research magazine.

Earlier this year I led a redesign of Resources magazine, providing an elegant, contemporary aesthetic to showcase their breakthrough research in environmental science and renewable energy.

For the second issue we went all out, as this year marked the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, the Clean Air Act and the Environmental Protection Agency. As well as a celebration of these milestones, the issue is full of important and timely research, all of which is brought to life through clean layouts, engaging infographics and beautiful illustrations.

For this issue we commissioned artwork from some incredible talent, including an impactful collaged cover by Jones & Co, a gorgeous depiction of the Clean Air Act by Yukai Du, and a clever conceptual piece about economics and the environment by Chiara Ghigliazza

In addition to designing and art directing the magazine in collaboration with Resources Managing Editor, Elizabeth Wason, I also created a number of illustrations as well as a large gatefold data visualization (which you can see in more detail here). Finally, I designed a playful deck of cards to accompany the issue as a gift, which included a selection of notable moments since the first Earth Day (which you can see here).

There were some ambitious goals with this issue, but it was a hugely enjoyable project with an end result that I couldn’t be happier with.
