Scratching the Surface

Scratching the Surface (We Had Created Him To Think Anal Sex Would Feel Like Taking A Dump), 2019
For my graduation at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam, in summer 2019, I chose to work with the idea of a collaboration with a machine. By working with several
open-source neural networks and other AI applications, I tried to create an understanding of how automised digital processes work.
Creating a feedback loop between what the machine is being fed and what I do with its results.
By combining personal and intimate work with the objective and unpredictable nature of machine vision and AIs, a story started to take form. With every try-out I imagined this virtual, digital entity trying to grasp concepts like emotions, touch and feelings. Concepts machines (as of yet) do not inherently understand or even possess.
This also mirrored the experiments and questions I was trying to answer about machines.

FRANK, Frivolous Autonomous Neural Komputer, became this tragic formless character trying to understand human feelings and concepts by simply
imitating, of course failing in the process.
During the graduation process I started writing shorts pieces of texts about my physical experiences and intimate memories, and ended up feeding this to an algorithm. This created poetic but bizarre bits of text, like a machine trying to talk about human experiences and concepts.
