Mount Rainier’s Paradise Area

Mount Rainier’s Paradise Area

Imagine a place with broad valleys filled with an abundance of spectacular wildflowers. The valleys dip into the adjoining, towering volcano that is so massive, it seems like a mirage. Blue tinted glaciers drape the slopes bringing drama to the scene. Cascading waterfalls feel like a discovered treasure. Standing at 14,410 feet, Mount Rainier dwarfs the surrounding landscape. On clear days, the peak graces the skyline view from Seattle and Olympic National Park.

I created this artwork to be part of my ongoing series of prints for my National Parks Co project. I designed the image to dramatize the massiveness scale, so the peak was aglow with the last light of the evening while cool shadows filled the rest of the scene. Rising clouds cloak the summit, adding depth and atmosphere. I included the vintage rugged stairs of the lower trail to pay tribute to the government workers who first built the trail. I felt that it hinted at a stairway to heaven.
I create a preliminary, black and white version of the design. I used this drawing to plan the linear patterns that flow through the color artwork.
