Emma Dante è stata molto precisa: per questo film si utilizzerà solo macchina a spalla (la mdp scelta dal Dop Gherardo Gossi è stata la Red Epic). Nessuna steadicam, nessun easyrig è stato usato per ammorbidire i numerosi piani sequenza che raccontano la sfida fra le due automobili in "Via Castellana Bandiera".
La linea guida che mi ha poi dato è stata di "essere un occhio non autorizzato", che si muove velocemente, che non segue in modo pedissequo l'azione ma che scruta in modo autonomo i personaggi e la paradossale, e al contempo normalissima, situazione di blocco stradale. L'uso libero dello zoom ad esempio (come si vede bene nella clip) è da leggere all'interno di questa direttiva registica.
La meticolosità che caratterizza il teatro di Emma Dante non si è affatto smentita sul set. L'uso della macchina a spalla non è stato mai casuale, i piani sequenza sono stati dettagliatamente costruiti nelle 4 settimane di prove che hanno anticipato le 5 settimane di riprese.
Lo sforzo di tutto il reparto fotografia è stato di dare a Emma la libertà creativa che lei trova quotidianamente nel suo teatro. Il cinema è molto più restrittivo ma il nostro eroico Dop è stato grandioso nel gestire i continui movimenti di macchina a 360 gradi sotto la luce accecante di una torrida estate siciliana. Valoroso anche il nostro primo assistente, Stefano Meloni, che mi ha dato sempre massima sicurezza nel girare i tortuosi piani sequenza: persino su di un gozzo in mezzo al mare!
La mia sfida, come operatore alla macchina, è stata di essere un "occhio non autorizzato" che sapesse tessere un proprio discorso all'interno della storia, senza mai perdere freschezza e curiosità nel susseguirsi dei ciak.
Emma Dante was very precise: for this film I want to use only shoulder camera (our Dop Gherardo Gossi has chosen the Red Epic). No steadicam, no easyrig had to soften the many long shots that tell the contest between the two cars in "Via Castellana Bandiera".
The guideline that she gave me was to "be an unauthorized eye", which moves quickly, which does not follow slavishly the action but who peers the characters and the paradoxical, and at the same normal, roadblock situation. The zoom use for example, very free as you can see in the clip, is to be read within this director's directive.
The meticulousness that characterizes Emma Dante's theater has not been denied on set. The use of shoulder camera has never been random, sequence shots were planned in detail during the 4 weeks of rehearsal that anticipated the 5 weeks of shooting.
Cinematography department's effort was to give to Emma the creative freedom she has got in her theater. The cinema is much more restrictive but our heroic Dop Gherardo Gossi has been great in being able to shot with continuous 360-degree camera movements, under the blinding light of a hot Sicilian summer. Valiant also our first camera assistant, Stefano Meloni, who always gave me maximum safety in the winding sequence shots: even on a boat in the sea!
My challenge, as camera operator, was to be an "unauthorized eye" who'd weave its own thought within the story, without losing freshness and curiosity in the succession of takes.
