As Editor of Black+White Photography magazine, I have been privileged to work with, interview, and learn from, some of the most talented photographers of our time, including Don McCullin, Sarah Moon, Martine Frank, Fay Godwin, David Bailey and many more. Since the magazine’s inception in 2001 there has been a huge rise in popularity of monochrome and Black+White currently sells worldwide.
My own photography has always been predominantly black & white, largely because I find it is the ideal medium for storytelling. And for me, that’s where my photography begins. I studied graphics and fashion after I left school, and later went on to do English at degree level and an MA in Creative Writing. My photographs are a melding of these interests. I love to find stories in everyday life, in the things and people that surround me – portraits predominate as a starting point for narrative, but I also love the objects or spaces that people leave behind them.
Lately I’ve been working with a Leica M9 rangefinder camera – it’s such a different approach to photographing with a DSLR, much more like using a film camera – and it suits the way I work. I have recently embarked on a project about women and work.

PORTFOLIO REVIEWS

The real key to photography, I believe, is good editing, knowing how to put images together and what to leave out. It’s a skill I’ve learnt over the years, working closely with many photographers. It is, of course, something that’s very hard to put into practice when it comes to your own work. I have run workshops for the World Photography Organisation as well as giving one-to-ones, helping people to recognise their strengths, shaping their images into a coherent body of work, and giving them guidelines and advice on getting their work published.

COMMISSIONS

I enjoy working to commission, discovering what my client is looking for and suggesting ways that this can be achieved.
