Course Description
This course is a hands-on and digital typography studio covering the history of type, from the Stone Age to the electronic age. Course work will focus on creative exercises that will reinforce the understanding of type; its style, structure, measurement and its design applications. You will be introduced to page layout software and will learn the basic functions of widely used programs as applied to typography studies, as well as through hands-on assignments.

Course Goals
• Gain a background in the history of written communication through the study of the
development and application of type and typography.
• Introduce the computer as a tool in the creative process.
• Explore type as an essential element of graphic design
• Explore the expressive use of type and the use of type as a tool for visual communication.
• Develop vocabularies that will enable the student to begin to speak professionally
about type.
• Foster the development of a creative and individual approach to the use of type.
• Course grade will be determined by attendance, class participation, quality of work,
timely completion of assignments and personal artistic growth.

Program Goal
To introduce students to the process involved in planning and executing the design of visual communications. To foster the ability to create and develop visual forms in response to design problems.
