Recently, a Virginia House committee defeated a bill that would have raised the minimum liability insurance coverage required for Virginia drivers.
For motorists who carry liability coverage, Virginia requires a minimum of $25,000 in coverage in the case of injury or death of one person in a single accident and $50,000 in the case of two or more people, as well as minimum coverage of $20,000 for property damage.
A bill introduced in the Virginia Senate proposed significantly raising these minimums to $100,000 for the injury or death of one person and to $200,000 if more than one individual is involved. The property damage figure would also double, from $20,000 to $40,000. A Senate committee amended the bill to reduce the bodily injury/death amounts to $35,000 if one individual is involved and $70,000 if there is more than one person in the accident, while keeping the property damage coverage at $40,000. But the amended bill failed in committee in the lower house of the Virginia legislature, the House of Delegates.
Virginia does not require motorists to carry liability insurance, but those who choose not to do so must pay a $500 uninsured motorist fee.
