EXISTENCE: LIGHT & OBJECTS
‘Existence’ is the notion of relative truth; the experience of having a relatively sustaining identity, grounded in the practical, conventional world. This ground is affirmed through the relentless desire to define, maintain and enhance a familiar sense of the ‘self’ through the form of materiality. This ground corresponds to the conventional idea of human life and is what most people view as the essence of their identity.
The interpreted notion of Existence, explores the interaction between man, objects and light. It is asserted that the objects around a person define his existence, and it is through the labelling and materiality that individuals identify themselves from the others, establishing their own actuality and way of life. The point that every individual determines his or her own existence through the personal articles he or she bears, is brought out in this thematic expression
INTENT & DESIGN DIRECTION
Inspired by the monoliths in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, Sanctum is a monolithic light structure that metaphorically expresses presence through solidity and materiality. The form of the lamp reveals a resemblance to an altar whereby the lighting expression of Sanctum mimics how light permeates into the architecture, giving the space a spiritual aura and the place where light hits gains an elevated presence.
FINAL DESIGN
Sanctum elevates the existence and identity of an individual by bearing his or her intimate objects or articles. To reiterate, it is the idea that objects around a person define who he or she is. Not merely a monastic altar of light, it is also an altar of objects significant to one. Meant to be a table lamp that function as an illumination by itself and for the articles it holds, it serves as a reminder to the user of the objects’ presence.
