Unbound Evaluates its Effectiveness

Since 1981, Thomas Allen Disselkamp has served as a product development specialist responsible for optical and electrical engineering at 3M Company in St. Paul, Minnesota. Thomas Disselkamp (Tom Disselkamp) also volunteers with a number of nonprofit organizations and sponsors two children through Unbound, which was formerly called the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging.

As a global nonprofit, Unbound evaluates its effectiveness in four areas, including education, economic stability, community participation, and parent empowerment. The organization looks at outcomes on an individual level and on a local program level.

To evaluate its success in community participation and parent empowerment, Unbound conducted a study of nearly 700 parents with sponsored children and found that parents involved in groups are more active in community decision making. Parents in groups also had higher scores across all of the participation indicators, such as program planning and budgeting. In the education category, Unbound found that sponsored children receive an education that enables them to compete for employment with their peers and act as educated community members.
