ADA's 2019 State and Federal Advocacy Priorities

In his role as a product development specialist in 3M Company's Infection Prevention Division, Thomas "Tom" Disselkamp contributes to the creation of sterilizers, incubators, and diagnostic and stethoscope products, and ensures all products meet regulatory requirements. In addition to his work responsibilities, Thomas Allen Disselkamp has volunteered and raised money for a variety of nonprofit organizations, including the American Diabetes Association (ADA).

The ADA works to cure diabetes and improve the lives of those who are affected by the disease. In addition to funding research and delivering services aimed at mitigating diabetes, the nonprofit organization advocates for crucial funding and resources at the state and federal levels. Its 2019 advocacy priorities emphasize increased funding for the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases at the National Institutes of Health and the Division of Diabetes Translation at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, among other research and prevention programs.

To accomplish the goal of increasing access to high-quality, affordable health care, the ADA is focusing is advocacy efforts on ensuring that private and public health insurance coverage options provide more affordable access to medications and necessary health care in line with its Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes. Other priorities include increasing transparency across the insulin supply chain, increasing physical activity, and ensuring the fair treatment of workers who have been diagnosed with diabetes.
