Wood Badge 2012-Award Winning!

Background:

The Greater Alabama Council of the Boy Scouts of America commissioned a mission patch design for their 2012 Wood Badge leadership training. The patch needed to be adaptable to different mediums, including embroidery, laser etching, and coin minting, while also showcasing the symbolism and meaning of the course theme of "Touch the Future."

Objectives:

-Create a design that could be translated to different mediums, including embroidery, laser etching, and coin minting.

-Reference the Cambridge University Oak tree story while also honoring the Scouting centennial.

Solution:

The design team took inspiration from the story behind the "Touch the Future" theme, which centered on the Cambridge University Oak trees that were planted when the college was built with the intention of using the lumber to repair the chapel in the future. This story was used to symbolize the idea that learning is a seed that is planted now in order to guide future leaders, much like the Oak trees.

In order to make the design adaptable to different mediums, the team kept it simple and focused on the use of strong lines and bold colors. The design featured an Oak tree with its roots representing the past and its branches reaching towards the future, with the words "Touch the Future" incorporated into the design. The design also incorporated the Scouting centennial logo to honor the organization's 100th anniversary.

Results:

The design was a success and was well-received by the Wood Badge participants. It looked great on official merchandise and items, and was also used on a variety of participant-created items such as hand-painted flags and wood-burned walking staves. The design also received recognition in the form of a gold award at the 2012 Hermes Awards and a silver award at the 2012 Communicator Awards.
