Serpentine Pavilion for Brno

The pavilion is placed in a spot, where a former “German house” was situated before the Second World War. Members of both cultures living in the city used to meet there. At present there is a functionless concrete fountain from the communist era. The Pavilion will be located in the middle of five crossing roads of the park. While looking at the plan and extending existing roads it creates a star shape. According to my observations, I gave greater importance to some roads .

Inspired by Serpentine Gallery in London the pavilion is only a seasonal construction, which could become a new tradition in Brno. Its purpose is to connect people. It will attract visitors by a variety of events held during summer like concerts, theaters, exhibitions, workshops etc. In the meantime in hot summer days it will be shading the lawn underneath for lounging or provide a place to sit at a height with a view of the city.

By picking up the roads off the ground and attaching them back again in one point it creates a star shape of the pavilion. In the center there is a circular stage surrounded by an upward auditorium, at the top there is round route for observing and then a descent stairwells also intended for sitting.

The pavilion itself has no volume it is almost possible to see through. The supporting structure with a horizontal stage have a large gaps. At the time of the event it become an advertisement to itself. When the auditorium is filled with people it gives a volume to the structure.
