In this series of lamps Sergio Mendoza explores the use of found materials around us. It is an evolution of his previous SMP limited series. Again he is giving a new life to old fruit crates – leftovers from local shops- but in this case the process has developed into a low-tech production.
Palitos [spanish for 'little sticks] are lamps of contrasts. The wooden chaos and the simple metal lines. The fragil translucent wood wich is torn down to pieces by hand and the solid powder cated steel which needs powerful tools to be bent.
In the production structure Sergio not only involves local fruit shops but also traditional small industries (endangered species in Valencia at the moment), with expert hands taking care of the metal and paint jobs. A next step will be handing over the wood construction to specific collectives that might benefit from it too.
