Upload and access street noise data based on Google Maps
Mapply is an application that allows users to upload and access street noise data based on Google Maps.

It gives instant access to important information on a street’s volume as uploaded by other users with the iPad 2’s built in microphone and geo–location feature.

Users can compare a street’s noise with area or national average to give context to the results. Data can be superimposed over Google Maps to provide an enhanced, multi–sensory experience.

I came up with the idea for Mapply as my friends and I are all re-locating to new cities and want to make sure we pick the right area to live in — something that can be hard when you don’t know the surroundings. Everything elseMapply is an application that allows users to upload and access street noise data based on Google Maps.
Mapply is an application based on data. To stop the experience feeling intimidating or sterile, the branding and user interface is loosely based around a familiar scenario: a folded map placed on a table.

Taking cues from everyday life, the design is careful not to stray into the overly skeuomorphic, but instead uses an appropriate amount of familiarity to put the user at ease with the statistics, graphs and map analysis contained in the content.

A simple homepage greets the user, providing one–click access to each feature within the application, as well as the ability to sign–in via Twitter or Facebook for a deeper, more integrated experience.

Users can record and upload the street noise where they are, search for a specific area or browse by desired result. For example, they might want a quiet nights sleep in Camberwell.

Recording takes place right on the homescreen, where a status bar based on a waveform lets the user know their progress. This makes the task as quick to perform as possible, as often a specific sound may want to be captured, for example a siren or noisy neighbour. The waveform is a gentle nod to the fact a recording is being made, and helps the user instantly identify what is happening.
Once signed–in, users are presented with a personal homepage with their own tailored content.

The independently scrolling, two–column layout displays Open Search and nearby results.

Open Search allows the user to specify something that they are looking for, with results continually updated as new sound recordings and information are added. This means that they can build a detailed picture of a specific query over time.

Nearby gives users a quick snapshot of the information in their current location, adding context to their environment.
