Loose Change

Sofa, Chair & Loveseat. 2012
Every once in awhile I get a little obsessed with negative space. I started sketching some rough ideas for a sofa with floating cushions. The first few attempts got a little caught up on an aggressive interplay of intersecting angles. Even though I liked some of the forms, they were too busy for the big idea. Eventually, I simplified the forms to a profile shape I nicknamed "Fat L."
We've all lost a remote control, a set of keys, or the occasional collection of loose change into the crevices of couch cushions. On this range, that notorious nether-region becomes the center of attention, and gets a bold splash of color to anchor it as a focal point.
The line is especially well-suited to commercial settings. The bold color splash disguises a seat-to-floor pass through. Loose change will fall straight to the floor where it can be easily swapped up by cleaning staff.
