Japan Fundraising Event Poster

Japan Disaster Fundraising
A poster to raise awareness and funds to donate to Red Cross
The nice thing about an MBA program is you get to meet people from different nations and one of them is from Japan. My friend was deeply affected by the recent disaster that struck Japan so she came up with an event to raise funds for the victims of this disaster.

To raise money, students who decide to come will pay for food served during the event. Funds then will be given to the Japanese Association at Queen's who will then donate it to Red Cross.

Despite being overloaded with design projects (note: I am not enrolled in a design school - I'm just an MBA student/full-time business owner of PdP), I volunteered my "services" to my friend. Actually, she was very hesitant to ask for my help but I just wanted to do this.  Personally, I just want to do something of social relevance and I don't mind if it's just a poster for a small fundraising event. It's still something worthwhile.

Making the poster was a bit of a challenge because I wanted to put as much effort in this poster as in my other design projects.  I've seen a lot of Japan-related posters already made by artists who aim to raise awareness as well so it was very hard to not do what have been done (e.g. steal their ideas).

My idea isn't 100% original though but again, is there even such a thing as original idea? The new site, Quora, is a culmination of the best features in Facebook, Twitter, Digg, etc. anyway. So inspired by a haiti poster by Pentagram, I decided to use seismic waves as well.

It makes me wonder why no one has come up with something like this... until I started doing the poster and realized that perhaps it's because it's too much work! haha Each line in this poster is a layer in Photoshop. I think I have over 200 layers or more. I lost count.

To make things even more challenging, I did not draw the lines but rather used a vector shape which I did manually.

All for the sake of Japan.
I learned from a friend how to make a 'crooked line' effect. Just randomly make this shape (red shape above) then compress until it forms a line.
Cool eh?
Struggling here. I initially wanted to do a short-cut and just clip the lines onto the (Japan) shape but it didn't turn out nice. So I ended up having different lengths for my lines. As you can see in this image, I was being lazy and just use 1 length for the lines.
Hoozah!!! Let the layering begin! haha
Final art! :) Hope a lot of people show up!
