The San Francisco Bay Area faces unique natural threats. With much land near or even below sea level, and a great portion of that unstable artificial bayfill, both sea level rise and earthquakes present great risks to a region expected to gain nearly 2 million new residents over the next 30 years.  These, as well as housing affordability and transportation issues, can all be addressed by building new, dense, mixed-use development around transit lines lying above the sea's potential reach.

 

I proposed a plan for a phased retrofitting of a sprawling area of the City of Fremont, centered around the crossing of two existing rail lines with undeveloped potential as a rail hub.

The site would take advantage of this and other potential transit improvements, as well as adjacent parkland and nearby auto-oriented developments with great potential for new development away from the threat of sea level rise.
