Cranes in Croatia - process

"CRANES IN CROATIA"
3" x 5" watercolor miniature painting

SKETCH
This is from the thumbnail sketch I chose, drawing it to scale, then traced onto the paper.
(There's a note to myself to trace the nest and top of chimney higher than originally planned.)
I made slight changes to the background as well.
IN PROGRESS
The birds, chimney and steeple are not touched yet.
The sky has some blue: initially thought to have solid blue sky - changed my mind.
Nest is yellower than actual, but I wanted this scene to have more color/whimsy rather than reality.
IN PROGRESS
Added more depth and shape to the sky ,
adding clouds with a heavier gouache-like technique with the watercolor paint.
a photograph of the finished painting after it was framed under glass.
(reproduction quality is not so great,
but just wanted to show the outline of the entire painting as it appears in exhibit :
due to the mats I had available, and due to time constraints
actual finished size is 3" x around 4 1/2"

DETAIL - birds in the nest
keep in mind: Actual size of this detail area is approximately  2" x 1".
DETAIL
keep in mind: Actual size of this detail area is approximately  2 1/2" x 1 1/2".
Here you see the entire building construction crane in the lower left background area,
and the flag that is not visible in the framed piece.
ROOF stages:
1) light burnt-yellow-reddish wash, 2) darker, browner washes on shade side of tiles.
3) dark shadow lines on each tile, & shadow of tiles along the roof ridge.
4) very thin lines on each tile to indicate the circular contour of the tiles' shape.
5) various washes added to intermittent tiles to show deeper red, or brown, etc., per tile to indicate aging, different tile batches.
CHIMNEY brick would have been painted  white years ago,
and has worn off near the top, exposing the brick underneath.
REFERENCE PHOTO
This is the photo by my niece, Adriana Vukmanic, that inspired me.
REFERENCE PHOTO
Part of a photo I took focusing on the typical tile roofs.
