Chardonnay is inspired by the word vintage. While researching its meaning, I came across two definitions: representing the high quality of a past time, and an exceptionally fine wine from the crop of a good year. Keeping “a past time” and wine in mind, I created a typeface that expressed those ideas. The proportions are inspired by type from the early 1900s and the circles represent the bubbles in sparkling wine. The curves of a wine glass are evident in the serifs, and the glass’ stem can be seen in the tail of the Q.
