Vyshyvka Typeface
Type Design, Non-Profit, Crafty Application
Vyshyvka is a typeface inspired by the organization A21. This human rights group confronts the problem of human trafficking (slavery) in the 21st century. There are currently about 27 million slaves in the world, which is more than there has been at any other time in history, so it’s definitely a good time to do something about it.

A21 started out by helping women get out of sex slavery in Greece. They are now expanding into Ukraine, a country where many girls are kidnapped for their “exotic look.” A transition home will be opening soon that will help victims medically and emotionally. A school program has also been started that will educate at-risk youth about human trafficking and how to spot false job opportunities.

Vyshyvka is inspired by the move into Ukraine. I wanted to create a design that would connect Ukrainian culture and the role of women. While researching Ukrainian traditions, I came across some blouses that had been beautifully embroidered in red and green. Embroidery is traditionally a woman’s work and has been a part of Ukrainian culture for centuries. The name of the typeface, Vyshyvka, is Ukrainian for embroidery.
