"Artemis Esen is one of the most successful writers of her time. Although she is only thirty two, she has more than fourty novels most of which have been translated to eighty languages landing her the title "the youngest most translated Turkish writer". This film is her (somewhat) biographical portrait."
Artemis is a mock-documentary project I have made as the final assignment for my graduate studio in May 2012. It's about a non-existent writer whose character is shown through other fictional characters who are or have been part of her life at different times. Artemis is the typical cliche female writer stereotype from her education to the people in her life. The film is aimed to question the truth claims of these types of documentaries. In terms of its content, it is a critic on the inconsistencies and superficialness of the Turkish literature entourage.
Artemis' inspirational sources were Woody Allen's Zelig in terms of its content and TV documentaries with an expository mode. The blank white frame used for the jump cuts, the interview and lightning style are adopted from the Turkish TV documentaries of the 90's. Especially in Turkey, these type of documentaries adopt a strong male dominant structure. Accordingly, we used only two female characters in Artemis but -as expected- they are unreliable or clueless.
