Immaculate Perception
The Toronto Sessions Vol. I
Watch people carefully – especially those of us who live in cities – and you will notice that they rarely look up.True, one should never under-estimate the dangers of city-life at street level, but I find it odd that, even when the coast is clear, hardly anyone checks to see what’s going on up above their heads. For most of us, the city consists of streets, sidewalks and very little else. The endless roar of cars and trucks, the traffic lights, trash bins, street lamps, storefronts and the thousands upon thousands of anonymous people who shuffle past us every day – this unstoppable pandemonium devours our attention, ensuring that we never take even a cursory glance toward the heavens.

Perhaps if some of them dared to lookup, they would see what I see all the time – a continuous unfolding of the most spectacular celestial events. Sometimes it’s little thing, like a speeding jet miles off in the distance, leaving behind a long, smoky-white thread suspended in a cloudless blue sky, or the particular way a shaft of sunlight glints off the windows of a massive office tower. Other times it may be a jaw-dropping display, like a dramatic cloud formation twisted by a powerful upper-atmospheric wind and carved out from the sky by the rays of the setting sun.

This collection of images is about looking up.

But it is also a personal journey of discovery. Each time I roam through the streets of Toronto with my camera, I am searching for the unseen, the unexplored, pushing myself to discover beauty in those hidden places we seldom look, in the little spaces in-between. This collection of photographs chronicles my wanderings around downtown Toronto and my endless pursuit of those rare and magnificent moments that appear before me for a fleeting moment and then disappear forever. This is my personal vision of Toronto. This is my Immaculate Perception.
