Icon Set: East Asian Hairstyles and Headdresses

Icon Set
Preliminary Sketches & Lined Draft
I originally wanted to make an icon set for traditional Asian clothes which can be seen in my process sketches. I chose the female version of traditional East Asian clothes like Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, and Chinese because I am more informed about these cultures. Then I illustrated  hairstyles and headwear to complete the set.
Revised and Simplified Draft
As much as I wanted to continue with my original idea, an issue I came across during the first ideation was clothes details would be lost at a small icon size. I decided to focus on the traditional hairstyles and headdresses. In addition to unify the set, I decided to compare historic styles.
The stylistic intent for the icon set was a hand-drawn feel. Hence, some lines and shapes of the icons aren’t meant to be perfect. Moreover, as I worked with cleaning up the lines, they started to feel like woodblock carving type of art.
